GRANGER — Icy roads reportedly caused a FedEx semitrailer to nearly fall off an overpass along the Indiana Toll Road on Wednesday morning.

The east-bound tractor-trailer slid off the overpass shortly before 9 a.m. as it neared mile marker 84 in Granger with the trailer slipping over the edge of the interstate and nearly falling onto a set of railroad tracks near Currant Road.

According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Ted Bohner, a car driving east in front of the truck lost its traction and began skidding, causing the semitrailer driver to swerve in response.

"The problem this morning has been icy bridge decks and there was several slide-offs and crashes near the 83-84 mile marker," Bohner said. "The truck was going eastbound and slid on the slick bridge deck and went over the edge there.”

Multiple agencies responded to the crash and at least three tow trucks were working to get the truck off the overpass by mid-morning Wednesday. Currant was closed from Cleveland Road to Brick Road for most of Wednesday afternoon, but it has since been reopened.

Crews managed to get the trailer off of the overpass by mid-Wednesday afternoon, and one lane of traffic is open. Crews are still working at the site to repair fiber-optic cables, Bohner said.

Around the same time as the crash near Currant Road, police also responded to a separate crash in which a van slid off the toll road near Cleveland and into some bushes below the highway.

Bohner said there were no injuries reported in either incident but warned motorists to drive cautiously in the icy conditions.
