Ida man dies after Jeep struck by U-Haul

A 60-year-old Ida man died Tuesday morning when a U-Haul truck crashed head on into the Jeep Patriot he was driving southbound on Lewis Ave. in Ida Township.

The accident occurred at approximately 7 a.m., according to a press release issued by the Michigan State Police Monroe Post.

From evidence collected on scene and interviews with witnesses, troopers determined that a U-Haul truck operated by a 30-year-old female from Monroe, and also occupied by 36-year-old and juvenile males, was traveling northbound on Lewis. The driver is believed to have fallen asleep, causing the vehicle to drift into the northbound lane.

The vehicle struck a black pickup truck driven by a 46-year-old male from Petersburg, then crashed head on into the Jeep driven by the 60-year-old Ida man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

All other occupants involved in the crash reported no injuries. Troopers were assisted on scene by Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Ida Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Monroe Community Ambulance.
