Prep football recap: Capital routs Timberline. Meridian pulls upset. Middleton runs away

Capital High football might not be what it once was, but the Eagles still own Timberline.

Capital bounced back from last week’s double-overtime loss with a 36-14 win Friday night over the Wolves at Dona Larsen Park – their 21st straight victory over Timberline.

The Eagles (2-3, 1-1 5A SIC Foothills) got a nearly flawless game from sophomore quarterback Brayden Dudley, who completed 20-of-26 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a 3-yard score.

Dudley’s favorite target was senior wide receiver Brady Call, who hauled in eight catches for 164 yards.

“Dudley was laser-focused all week in his preparation,” Capital coach Kevin Hastin said. “We had full confidence in him going into tonight. He ran the whole offense. We didn’t take anything out of the offense. He wasn’t fazed by Friday night lights.”

While the Capital offense ticked along smoothly, Timberline (0-5, 0-2) did itself no favors. The Wolves turned the ball over twice on downs in the first half, lost three fumbles and had an interception.

The third of those fumbles came on their own 9-yard line, giving Capital an easy two-play drive to extend its lead to 23-6 in the second quarter.

The Eagles also blocked two kicks: an extra point and a 32-yard field goal attempt.

“The kicking game is a big part of what we do, we put a big emphasis on it,” Hastin said. “The turnovers were huge. Our guys are tackling violent and stripping that ball. And it was the difference tonight.”

Timberline sophomore QB Jack Brant finished 27-for-49 for 259 yards and two touchdowns, both to senior Lucas Midgett.

Senior Davis Jackson had 200 return yards for the Wolves, including a 73-yarder in the second quarter. But the Wolves lost their 15th straight game. Their last win came over Skyview in 2021.
