The Idaho Statesman is hiring two news interns for summer 2024. Here’s how to apply

The Idaho Statesman is looking for two news reporter interns to join our staff for 10 weeks in the summer of 2024.

The Statesman has a long tradition of helping journalists launch their careers through our internship program. Our interns the past two summers — Andrea Teres-Martinez of Boise State University, Catherine Odom of Northwestern University, Noble Brigham of Brown University and Gabe Barnard of Montana State University — produced a variety of work, including many breaking news reports and in-depth stories on road projects, insurance rates, electric vehicle infrastructure, one way abortion laws are affecting Idahoans, nursing home inspections and the University of Idaho’s agreement to purchase the University of Phoenix.

Our 2024 interns will have a chance to report on a wide swath of topics and develop the skills they’ll need in their first full-time jobs, including speed, accuracy, thoroughness and teamwork.

In the past 18 months, our team has produced work that inspired a change to Idaho law about use of restraint-and-seclusion techniques in schools; spotlighted a U.S. senator’s attempt to reroute Boise air traffic from the area where he lives; exposed the plight of some sheepherders working in Idaho with little oversight of their working conditions; explained the state of rural Idaho’s crumbling schools; and deepened the public’s understanding of the murder case involving four deaths at the University of Idaho.

We are located in Boise, Idaho, a community that lands on many best-of lists for its quality of life. Our community features unique restaurants, many opportunities for outdoor recreation and a lively arts scene.

The application deadline is Dec. 31, 2023. Work dates will be customized based on the academic calendar of the successful candidates, with spring and fall options. You can apply here.
