Idaho Vandals football team beats another Top 10 team, moves into tie for first place

The Idaho Vandals football team moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Big Sky Conference on Saturday with a dramatic win.

The Vandals scored a touchdown with 2 minutes, 47 seconds remaining to top Montana State 24-21. Quarterback Gevani McCoy connected with Hayden Hatten for the winning score from 12 yards out.

FCS No. 8 Idaho improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big Sky. No. 2 Montana State also is 6-2, 4-1.

No. 5 Montana is 4-1 in the Big Sky, too. Idaho State was 3-1 and playing Sacramento State on Saturday night.

Idaho led Montana State 10-0 at halftime and trailed 14-10 after the third quarter. The teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with Idaho’s Anthony Woods scoring on a 3-yard run and Montana State’s Julius Davis answering with a 24-yard run.

After the Vandals took their final lead, Montana State missed a 43-yard field-goal attempt with 18 seconds left.

Idaho has three wins against FCS Top 25 teams this season, including two against teams ranked in the Top 10 at kickoff. The Vandals’ conference loss was to Montana.

The Vandals finish the regular season with two of the worst teams in the conference, Northern Colorado on Nov. 4 and Weber State on Nov. 11, before closing at home Nov. 18 against Idaho State. Montana and Montana State still must play each other on Nov. 18.
