Noah Thompson is the American Idol 2022 winner but some are still chanting HunterGirl’s name. As it turns out, Luke Bryan is on the receiving end of the outcries.

During Sunday night’s American Idol season 5 (overall 20th season) finale, Ryan Seacrest announced the Kentucky native as the latest winner of the ABC singing competition show. After Noah performed an encore of his new single “One Day Tonight,” Luke took the opportunity to congratulate him on his accomplishment on Twitter. What’s more, he gave a special shoutout to the rest of the American Idol contestants, including runner-up HunterGirl whose real name is Hunter Wolkonowski.

“That’s a wrap on one of the best seasons I’ve been a part of,” he wrote. “We’re all very proud of each contestant and excited to see what’s next with our winner @noahthompsonmu1 . Love y’all #AmericanIdol.”

But many folks didn’t think HunterGirl should have come in second place and they let the American Idol judge know. “The winner’s name is spelled @huntergirlmusic,” one person wrote. “Should have been @huntergirlmusic,” another added. “I was pulling for @huntergirlmusic,” a different fan said.

Still, there were American Idol fans who wished Noah and HunterGirl the best, regardless of the winning title. “Best season by far!!! Congratulations Noah and I know HunterGirl is going to have an amazing year ❤️,” a follower commented.

It seems like Luke agreed with this sentiment, especially after he and HunterGirl performed a duet of “I Told You So” by Randy Travis during the finale. “Your #AmericanIdol journey has been incredible,” he tweeted during the finale. “I’m proud to have shared the stage with you @huntergirlmusic.” Responding to the post, someone else chimed in, "She should have won idol. I hope you get her signed with a label tonight."

So, what does HunterGirl think about how it all played out? It sounds like she’s taking the results in stride and looking ahead at what’s to come. Apart from sharing her gratitude with Luke, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, she threw her support behind Noah’s win.

“This year has been a wild ride!! 💛,” she wrote on Instagram. “I have grown so much as person. I am blessed that I got to have this crazy experience with people that I love and care about. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. Thank you to everyone on the team here at @americanidol for believing in me.”

She continued: “I am so excited for the future, and I will always remember my time here on American Idol. Thank you to God for having a plan for me greater than I could’ve ever imagined. Also huge congratulations to one of my best friends @noahthompsonmusic. I am so proud of you!!! ✨.”
