IDOT releases updated Illinois highway map

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced the release of their new Illinois Official Highway Map.

The map gets updated every other year. This year, the new Illinois Official Highway Map includes route updates, detailed sections devoted to cities like Zion and Cairo, and mileage between towns and marked route junctions.

“Paper maps remain an important resource and a valuable travel companion to keep in your vehicle,” Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman said. “I encourage you to request a copy today. Not only are maps handy for planning purposes, enabling you to see the state or larger cities at a glance, they also come in handy when you least expect it, serving as a backup when you lose cell service on unfamiliar roads.”

QR codes are also printed on the map to provide quick, digital access to information on state travel conditions, Amtrak, parks, historic sites and the Office of Tourism’s Enjoy Illinois campaign. All this and more can always be found on IDOT’s Getting Around Illinois website.

The photograph on the new map’s cover was taken by condemnation engineer Jeffrey Emrick, winner of IDOT’s employee map cover contest. It features a brick section of Old Route 66 between Auburn and Chatham.

The Illinois Official Highway Map is printed on recycled paper with soybean oil-based inks. It is paid for with funds from the Federal Highway Administration.

Free copies will be available at interstate rest areas and other IDOT facilities. To request a map, email DOT.maps@illinois.gov.
