Idris Elba is ready for his next case in Luther – on the big screen, this time.

Hopes have been high for a film version of the BBC crime drama ever since Luther wrapped up its fifth series as a week-long TV event back in January 2019.

Friday (July 31) was a huge night in Elba's career as he accepted the Special Award at the Virgin Media BAFTA TV Awards 2020, and it was also a time for him to preview what's next for him.

"I've maintained that I'd like to see [Luther] come to a film," he told Digital Spy and other press after his win. "That's what I think we're headed towards, is a film. I'm looking forward to making that happen."

The actor then confirmed: "It is happening!"

Elba also opened up about how the chance to move the franchise from TV to film will give him new ground to explore a character he's now played for 10 years.

"With a film, the sky is the limit," he said. "Obviously, you can be a little bit more bold in the storylines, maybe international, a little bit sort of up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther."

Elba's confirmation of the BBC film spin-off moving ahead is a major development, since he revealed mere weeks ago that he was "this close" to making it a reality.

It's wonderful to get some positive news from the actor, since both Elba and his wife Sabrina Dhowre Elba tested positive for COVID-19 in the early days of the pandemic and were forced to quarantine for two weeks.

He is currently promoting the third series of the semi-autobiographical In the Long Run, which is now available to watch on Sky One and NOW TV.
