Following in the footsteps of actor Tom Hanks, Idris Elba, 47, has used social media to share that he too has been tested positive for coronavirus. His announcement came shortly after the government shared that they're encouraging social distancing for the general population, and urged pregnant women to take extra care.

Idris said that he has tested positive for COVID-19 despite showing no symptoms and that along with his wife, Sabrina Dhowre Elba, 30, he would be self-isolating going forward. The actor and DJ captioned his video: "This morning I tested positive for Covid 19. I feel ok, I have no symptoms so far but have been isolated since I found out about my possible exposure to the virus. Stay home people and be pragmatic. I will keep you updated on how I’m doing. No panic."

Idris explains that despite not showing symptoms, he was tested after realising that he had been in contact with somebody who tested positive for coronavirus for themselves.

"Hey, what's up guys. So look, this morning I got some test results back for coronavirus and it came back positive" Idris begins the video by saying. "Yeah, and it sucks. Listen, I'm doing okay. Sabrina hasn't been tested and she's doing okay."

He then continued on to explain his reasoning for having the test in the first place."I got tested because I realised I was exposed to someone who had also tested positive. I found out last Friday they had tested positive, I quarantined myself and then got a test immediately and got the results back today."

The Luther star then stressed the importance of being vigilant about hygiene and social distancing during these uncertain times.

"Look, this is serious. Now is the time to really think about social distancing, washing your hands... beyond that, there are people out there who aren't showing symptoms and that can easily spread it. Now's the time to be really vigilant about washing your hands and keeping your distance."

Idris said that both he and Sabrina have informed their families and colleagues of their situation. At present, he says, Sabrina has not been tested.

He ended the video on a positive note, saying that the spread of the virus is a chance for everybody to unite together.

"We live in a divided world right now, we can all feel it. It's been bullshit. But now is the time for solidarity. Now is the time for thinking about each other. There are so many people whose lives have been affected, from those who have lost people that they love, to people who don't even have it and have lost their livelihoods. This is real."

Our very best wishes go out to Idris and Sabrina.
