IHSAA basketball: Ben Rhoades resigns as coach at Mt. Vernon following OWI arrest
Ben Rhoades has resigned as boys basketball coach at Mt. Vernon.
Rhoades was placed on leave following his arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated Feb. 20 in Shelbyville. He was allowed to return to his teaching position starting next week, though his coaching position was under review.
Rhoades, who led Mt. Vernon to a 74-42 record with sectional championships in 2021 and ’22, resigned from his coaching position Friday.
“After much consideration, I have decided to resign from the position of varsity boys basketball coach,” Rhoades said in a statement from the school corporation. “I have enjoyed the opportunity to be the boys basketball coach, a part of the Mt. Vernon community, and especially a small part of many players’ lives and accomplishments both on and off the basketball court the past five seasons. I wish Mt. Vernon boys basketball nothing but success in the future.”
Mt. Vernon will begin the search for a new coach immediately.
“Mt. Vernon appreciates Mr. Rhoades’ time and dedication to the Mt. Vernon High School boys basketball program that grew during the past five years under his direction,” the school statement said.
