Cathedral 40, Center Grove 29

Three takeaways from Class 6A third-ranked Cathedral’s 27-point fourth quarter flurry for a thrilling 40-29 win at second-ranked Center Grove Friday night.

Play of the game: Where to start? There were so many great plays, especially in the fourth quarter. But the game seemed to really turn on a blocked punt by Hosia Smith with 4:24 left. Stu Smith picked the ball up at the 3-yard line and ran it in for a touchdown to pull Cathedral to within 29-26. Cathedral coach Bill Peebles called that play the one “that made (the comeback) possible." The Cathedral defense got a three-and-out on the next possession and went right back down and scored again.

Crazy comeback:After 'embarrassingly bad' 2 1/2 quarters, Cathedral breaks through

Turning point: Center Grove led 29-13 after a dominant third quarter, scoring two touchdowns as the running game picked up traction with Micah Coyle and Jalen Thomeson. The Trojans had a chance to put the game away on a drive early in the fourth quarter, but was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 9:02 left. A touchdown there, or even a field goal, would have put the game away. Instead, it kept the door open for Cathedral to come back down the field on a 99-yard drive less than 3 minutes later to make it 29-19.

Standout performer: Cathedral quarterback Danny O’Neil was not exactly thrilled with his performance – or that of Cathedral’s offense, which was penalized 10 times and committed three turnovers. But O’Neil came up big in the clutch, leading Cathedral on a needed 99-yard drive in the fourth quarter and completing a 33-yard pass to Jaron Tibbs on fourth-and-10 and following it with a 35-yard pass to David Ayers for the go-ahead touchdown with 50.8 seconds left. — Kyle Neddenriep

Hamilton Southeastern 31, Brownsburg 28

No. 4 Hamilton Southeastern earned a 31-28 win over No. 1 Brownsburg. The win completes an undefeated regular season for the Royals and gives them the outright Hoosiers Crossroads Conference title.

Play of the Game: With less than 2 minutes remaining, Brownsburg had a chance to tie it with a short field goal. HSE defensive linemen Evan Sherrill and Dominic Burgett combined to block the kick, sealing the win for the Royals.

Turning point: HSE turned the tide of the entire game in the second half. The first half, specifically the final minutes of the second quarter, could not have gone worse for the Royals. After a Caleb Marcus touchdown run, a quick three-and-out gave Brownsburg the ball back in HSE territory. Garrett Sherrell scored a rushing touchdown, and a fumble on the ensuing kickoff set up a Corey Smith touchdown catch from backup quarterback Jake Dunn. Brownsburg scored three times in the final 3:36 of the second quarter, but the Royals would not let them score again. Brownsburg fumbled on the first play of the third quarter, leading to 17 unanswered points by HSE.

'There's no more H-S-Easy.'HSE caps undefeated regular season by beating No. 1 Brownsburg

Player of the Game: Ty Bradle and Donovan Hamilton.

Griffen Haas excelled as a short-yardage back and recovered a fumble on defense. Sherrill and Burgett made the key field goal block, but the combination of quarterback Ty Bradle and Donovan Hamilton came through whenever the Royals needed a big play. The duo connected early and often. — Akeem Glaspie

Carmel 27, Lawrence Central 7

CARMEL – With two weeks off before their postseason officially begins, the Class 6A fifth-ranked Carmel Greyhounds made it a point to course correct during their regular-season finale Friday night.

The Greyhounds (6-3) lost at rival Warren Central, 20-13, last week, but on Senior Night against No. 13 Lawrence Central at Carmel Stadium, the upperclassmen shined with a 27-7 victory.

Carmel's turnaround was led by a two-touchdown performance from quarterback Jack Kazmierczak and a 63-yard pick-6 in the third quarter by senior Kyle Fedorcha.

More:Last week's loss was a turning point for Carmel, now its 'comfortable being the underdog.'

Kazmierczak completed 17 of 23 passes for 153 yards and an 11-yard touchdown pass to Aydrian Caldwell in the second quarter.

Carmel senior Reece Bellin hauled in six passes for 95 yards, including a clutch one-handed, 26-yard reception on fourth-and-3 on LC's 33 to setup the Greyhounds' first TD drive.

Alijah Alfayyad, a junior, rushed for 58 yards on 17 carries and a 7-yard touchdown in the first quarter, while Kazmierczak ran in for a 1-yard score to make it 27-0 early in the fourth.

Fedorcha’s pick highlighted a stout defensive showing for Carmel, which allowed just 44 yards of total offense by halftime. The Lawrence Central Bears (4-5) finished with 221 yards by game’s end with 175 through the air but were 4 of 13 on third down.

LC quarterback Qterry Walker III completed 8 of 24 pass attempts with most of his yardage coming on a 63-yard touchdown pass to Ahmaad Duff in the fourth quarter. — Rich Torres

Western Boone 30, Lebanon 14

LEBANON – With at least a share of the Sagamore Conference title on the line, Western Boone again looked to its star running back to pave the way – and he did so in dominating fashion.

Senior Trevor Weakley rushed for more than 150 yards and added three touchdowns to lead the Class 3A, eighth-ranked Stars to a 30-14 win over rival Lebanon on Friday night.

The win gives Western Boone (6-1, 8-1) at least a share of the conference title. Tri-West also had a chance at a share of the crown if it beat Southmont on Friday.

'He’s pretty special':Trevor Weakley carries WeBo to Sagamore title

It’s the Stars their first conference title since 2019. The Tigers finish the regular season 5-2 and 6-3.

Play of the game: The Stars pulled out their book of tricks in the final seconds of the first half. Facing a 2nd-and-19 from the Lebanon 19, senior quarterback Rowen Durbin handed the ball off to Ryan Taylor on the left side. Taylor then pitched it to running back Ethan Bayles. Instead of taking off with the ball, Bayles flea flicked it back to Durbin who found a sprinting Taylor wide open down the sideline for the touchdown. After the extra point, the score gave Western Boone a 23-6 lead with 1.3 seconds remaining in the first half.

Turning point: Western Boone had just grabbed the momentum after a 2-yard touchdown run from Weakley helped push the Stars’ lead to 16-6 with 2:26 to play in the first half. On the ensuing kickoff, Lebanon’s Brendan Shockley fumbled the kickoff at the Tigers’ 30. Western Boone capitalized a few plays later on Durbin’s TD pass to Taylor.

Standout performer: Weakley was the leading force for the Stars’ offense. The 5-foot-10, 185 pound back rushed for 118 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns – in the first half. He finished the game with 171 yards rushing. — Tom Moor
