IHSAA football power rankings Week 7: We've got some shakeup as top teams fall

The Indianapolis-area high school football power rankings through six weeks:

Class 6A

1. Center Grove (5-1): I’m not sure whether to think better or worse of the Trojans after Friday’s 63-41 wild win over Lawrence Central. The offense looked great. The defense looked much better in the second half, but has work to do. Maybe just chalk it up to a weird game and an LC offense that can pose problems. Noah Coy (31 catches, 716 yards, six TDs) is in line for a 1,000-yard receiving season. Up next: at Pike. Previous: 1.

2. Brownsburg (6-0): The Bulldogs dominated up front on defense in a 31-14 win over Westfield, limiting the Shamrocks to minus-3 yards on the ground. That is a good recipe for winning football. Corey Smith had five catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. Up next: at Zionsville. Previous: 2.

3. Hamilton Southeastern (6-0): The Royals have earned a bump in the rankings, the latest evidence a 31-13 win over Zionsville. Ty Bradle passed for 278 yards and the defense held Zionsville to 47 rushing yards. Up next: at Noblesville. Previous: 5.

What We Learned Week 6:A wild one at Center Grove, conference races tighten

IHSAA football top performers: Freshman QBs, Luke Hansen (again) and CG-LC fireworks

4. Ben Davis (4-2): The Giants led by three touchdowns, then had to hold on for a 34-28 victory over Lawrence North. Marques Reese caught seven passes for 132 yards and two TDs and Alijah Price had 136 rushing yards and a score. Ben Davis is allowing 30.3 points in its last three games. Previous: 3.

5. Cathedral (4-1): The Irish returned after a week off with a 56-0 win at Hammond Morton with all of the points scored in the first half. Danny O’Neil passed for 109 yards and three TDs and Carson Johnson ran for 155 yards and two scores. Up next: vs. Cincinnati LaSalle at Arlington. Previous: 4.

6. Carmel (4-2): The Greyhounds were tied at the end of the first quarter, but eventually cruised to a 50-19 win over North Central. Alijah Alfayyad had his best game of the season with 144 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Carmel also scored on a safety, a kickoff return, a blocked punt return and an interception return. Up next: vs. Ben Davis. Previous: 6.

7. Fishers (4-2): After back-to-back losses to Hamilton Southeastern and Brownsburg, the Tigers had to survive a scare to knock off Avon, 21-17. The Orioles scored 17 consecutive points to take the lead, but a 90-yard kickoff return by JonAnthony Hall in the fourth quarter saved the Tigers, who were outgained 433 to 290 in total yardage. Previous: 7.

8. Westfield (3-3): Tyler Dikos had 15 tackles and an interception in Westfield’s 31-14 loss to Brownsburg, a second consecutive loss for the Shamrocks for the first time in the same season since 2019. Up next: vs. Avon. Previous: 8.

9. Zionsville (4-2): The Eagles are coming off a 31-13 loss to Hamilton Southeastern and have another difficult test ahead with Brownsburg visiting. Wrigley Bumgardner had five catches for 124 yards in the loss to HSE. Previous: 9.

10. Lawrence Central (3-3): If the Bears can fix some things on defense, this will be a dangerous team in the sectional. Lawrence Central lost 63-41 to Center Grove despite rolling up more than 500 yards of offense. Up next: North Central. Previous: 10.

Dropped out: None

Class 5A

1. Whiteland (5-1): Whiteland’s perfect season ended with a 35-21 loss at Martinsville. The offense put up 397 yards (225 on the ground), but committed two turnovers and the defense allowed 418 yards. There is not letup here with Mooresville visiting this week. Previous: 1.

2. Franklin (4-2): The Grizzly Cubs pulled off a 28-21 upset at Mooresville with freshman Greyson Betts filling in at quarterback for injured Clay Pinnick with two TD passes. John Shepard rushed for 125 yards and a TD. Franklin hosts Plainfield this week. Previous: 3.

3. Plainfield (3-3): The Quakers earned a hard-fought 34-32 overtime win over Decatur Central for a third consecutive victory and its first over the Hawks since 2012. Hunter Newell threw for 199 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more TDs. A tough four-game stretch continues this week at Franklin. Previous: NR.

Dropped out: Decatur Central (3)

Class 4A

1. New Palestine (6-0): The Dragons rolled to a 42-7 victory over Greenfield-Central as Daniel Tippit IV passed for 215 yards and tied a school record with five TD passes. Up next: at Shelbyville. Previous: 1.

2. Roncalli (6-0): The Royals trailed at halftime before controlling the second half in a 31-14 win over Brebeuf Jesuit. Luke Hansen ran 43 times for 261 yards and four TDs. Up next: Louisville Male (Ky.). Previous: 2.

3. Martinsville (5-1): The Artesians made one of the big splashes of the week with a 35-21 victory over Whiteland. Brayden Shrake’s big game (32 carries for 175 yards and two TDs) helped Martinsville control the game and Tyler Adkins passed for 215 yards and three TDs. Up next: vs. Perry Meridian. Previous: NR.

Dropped out: Mooresville (3)

Class 3A

1. Bishop Chatard (4-2): Chatard was pushed in a 31-30 win over Guerin Catholic as the Golden Eagles went for 2 after a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, but could not convert. Interesting game this week for the Trojans as CBC from St. Louis visits. Previous: 1.

2. Tri-West (4-2): After back-to-back close wins over Western Boone and Danville, the Bruins could not close out Lebanon and dropped a 21-14 decision to the Tigers despite 247 passing yards and two TDs from Ty Owens. I’m not dropping Tri-West, though, for a close loss to a quality 4A program. Up next: North Montgomery. Previous: 2.

3. Western Boone (5-1): The Stars rolled to a 56-6 win over Frankfort as Rowen Durbin was 10-for-13 passing for 364 yards and five TDs. Up next is a home showdown with 6-0 Southmont. Previous: 3.

Dropped out: None

Class 2A/A

1. Lutheran (6-0): The Saints jump back into the top spot with a 28-19 win over Scecina that also puts them in the driver’s seat in the Indiana Crossroads Conference race. Jackson Willis passed for 168 yards and Joe Davis rushed for 109 yards. Lutheran hosts Monrovia this week. Previous: 2.

2. Scecina (5-1): The Crusaders led Lutheran in the second half, but could not hold on in a 28-19 loss. All is not lost, however, as Scecina faces another difficult test this week against Triton Central, a potential sectional rival in 2A. Previous: 1.

3. Triton Central (5-1): The Tigers cruised to a 58-15 victory over Cardinal Ritter as the starters played only the first half. Up next is a showdown with Scecina at Tech. The Crusaders have won seven of the past eight games between the programs. Previous: 3.
