IKEA is growing in the U.S. Could Louisiana finally be getting a store?

The popular furniture store IKEA announced Thursday that it would be opening eight new stores in the U.S. over the next three years — as well as nine plan and order points and 900 pick-up locations — so could Louisiana be in the crosshairs of the Swedish furniture giant?

USA TODAY reported that the company, known for its warehouse-style shopping experience and its ready-to-assemble furniture (not to mention the famous meatballs), has not yet decided where the new stores will be located, but the company said it's looking to launch in cities where IKEA already has a presence, as well as some new markets. Currently, Louisiana sits in a small IKEA-less vacuum made up of Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama.

The company currently has around 51 stores and two plan and order points — smaller stores focused on bedroom, kitchen and living room planning — in the U.S. The closest locations for Louisiana shoppers are in Houston, the Dallas area, Round Rock (Texas), San Antonio, Memphis (Tennessee) and Atlanta (Georgia). There is also a pickup location for online orders in Baytown, Texas.

The expansion in the U.S. is part of a plan to invest more than $2.2 billion in the U.S. market, the company said in a release. It's the largest investment IKEA has made in the U.S. in around 40 years, the company said.
