IKEA has teamed up with Little Sun-a company co-founded by renowned artist Olafur Eliasson-to bring power to people all over the world. The project, which is being called "Sammanlänkad" (Swedish for "connected"), will try to reach the billion people who have limited or no access to power by creating a collection of products powered by the sun.
According to Little Sun, Sammanlänkad "will contribute to sustainable and independent from electrical grid lifestyles." The product line will feature functional pieces of furniture like lamps and ceiling lights that will contain a removable battery, or energy store, which can be charged by solar to be used as light source when needed.
"The collaboration with IKEA is a huge opportunity to raise awareness for energy access and the urgent need for global solutions, while at the same time working with world-leading product designers," Eliasson says.
Sammanlänkad's product lineup will also include solar panels that are small enough to hang in a window, designed to charge portable electronics like laptops and phones. The energy stores made to fit within a larger device will be roughly the size of a palm.
While Sammanlänkad is currently in the prototype phase, IKEA and Eliasson have plans to launch the line in 2021 across all of the furniture giant's markets. But if you can't wait until then, these products will tide you over until Sammanlänkad invades stores. Here are our five favorite pieces of game-changing, solar-powered gear.
