Ikea releases recipe so Swedish meatball fans can get their fix during pandemic

Ikea is well known for a couple things: giant stores, complicated instructions, varying furniture quality and, for some, Swedish meatballs.

With stores closed for the coronavirus pandemic and many people stuck at home trying to ward off the monotony of social distancing, Ikea just released the recipe for its iconic Swedish meatballs and cream sauce.

“Missing your IKEA meatball fix? We’ve created a recipe for you to recreate this delicious dish in the comfort of your own home,” Ikea UK tweeted.

The company shared the recipe drawn up to look just like other assembly instructions from the retailer.

The meatballs are a combination of beef and pork combined with onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, eggs and milk with salt and pepper.

The sauce recipe is relatively easy, too, so even beginner cooks can try their hand at the legendary Ikea meal.

The recipe was shared on the Ikea UK’s Twitter account using British measurements. Here’s the same recipe converted and approximated for U.S. measures:

Ikea’s Swedish Meatballs: Serves 4

Ingredients

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • 1/2 pound ground pork

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 1 clove of garlic (crushed or minced)

  • 2/3 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 5 tablespoons of milk (whole milk)

  • Generous salt and pepper

For the cream sauce

  • Dash of oil

  • 1/3 cup butter

  • 1/3 cup plain flour

  • 2/3 cup vegetable stock

  • 2/3 cup beef stock

  • 2/3 cup thick double cream

  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce

  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Meatballs:

“Combine beef and pork mince and mix with your fingers to break up any lumps. Add finely chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, and mix. Add milk and season well with salt and pepper.

“Shape mixture into small, round balls. Place on a clean plate, cover, and store in the fridge for two hours (this will help them hold their shape whilst cooking).

“In a frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. When hot, gently add meatballs and brown on all sides.

“When browned, add to an ovenproof dish and cover. Place in a hot oven (350°F conventional or 320°F fan) and cook for a further 30 minutes.”

Swedish cream sauce:

“Melt (1/3 cup) butter in a pan. Whisk in (1/3 cup) of plain flour and stir for two mins. Add (2/3 cup) of veg stock and (2/3 cup) of beef stock and continue to stir. Add (2/3 cup) of double cream, 2 tsp of soy sauce, and 1 tsp of Dijon mustard. Bring it to simmer and allow sauce to thicken.

“When ready to eat, serve with your favorite potatoes - either creamy mash or mini new boiled potatoes. Enjoy!”
