Illinois' largest car show returning to Galesburg area among 12 things to do this weekend

The first weekend in August provides more opportunities to hear music locally, plus the largest car show in Illinois and a fundraiser for St. Jude's.

Here are 12 things to do in the Galesburg area this weekend:

Cruise Night in the Maple City

What: Cruise Night has had over 1,400 cars and 25,000 spectators. The event has also had all kinds of vehicles from muscle cars to lowriders, trucks and a little bit of everything for people to look at. There will also be 50/50 drawings, live music, food vendors and much more.

When: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4

First Fridays on Seminary Street

What: An opportunity to get outside, relax, breathe deeply, visit with your friends and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of Historic Seminary Street as you browse the shops for the latest must-haves, listen to the live, local music and either visit one of our restaurants or sample their offerings on the street.

When: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4

The Extreme Tour

What: The extreme national tour is coming to Galesburg for its third year. The tour features live music, skateboarding and BMX competitions along with other giveaways. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy five bands/artists.

When: 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4

Concerts in the Colony: Suzy Bogguss with special guest Morgan Myles

What: Bishop Hill Heritage Association has planned a series of free, family-friendly concerts over the course of the summer. Guests are asked to bring lawn chairs. In addition to food and drink options offered by Bishop Hill establishments, area organizations and vendors will be set up to provide additional food and drink options during these events. The Saturday August 5 concerts starts off at 1 p.m. with Morgan Myles performing. Then Aledo's very own Suzy Bogguss will finish off the day with her performance.

South Pacific in Concert

What: Watch the Orpheum Theatre production of South Pacific in concert directed by Tim Holmes, with music directed by Kurt Killam. This musical has a long history at The Orpheum. The show is a romantic, thought provoking musical journey through the life of a WWII nurse.

When: 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6

Slippin’ and Slidin’ for St. Jude

What: Your donation to slide includes a day filled with water slides and kiddie pools. There will be food served at the event, as well as a live auction, a silent auction and raffles to check out.

When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5

Cost: $20 donation to slide; free for children ages 3 and younger

NAACP Galesburg Branch 3016 Cookout

What: Free community cookout, with free food, activities and community organizations.

Bluegrass & BBQ

What: Bluegrass music from New Cats. The band members encompass a wide mixture of music backgrounds from jazz to punk and each bring their own unique flavor to the bluegrass genre. They fuse a mixture of high energy and up-tempo new and traditional bluegrass and folk music, along with a handful of their own finely crafted tunes.

Bird Walk

End of Summer Break Bash

What: Community Hygiene Pantry is hosting a back-to-school event. There will be free haircuts, hygiene kits and activities for the kids to ensure their self-confidence for that first day of school. Three cosmetologists will be present to cut the children’s hair. DJ Junebug will play music. Hygiene kits and leis will be given to the children while supplies last.

When: Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6
