Illinois man dies in Volusia County crash Saturday night, FHP says

A 75-year-old Illinois man is dead after a rollover crash on U.S. Highway 1 near Benton Street in northern Volusia County on Saturday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 33-year-old woman driving a Toyota Camry was leaving a Racetrac and entering into the northbound lanes of U.S. 1 around 9 p.m. when she attempted to cut into the left turn lane and crossed into the path of a 70-year-old man driving a Lincoln sedan, FHP said.

The Camry struck the right side of the Lincoln and caused the car to overturn onto its roof, FHP said.

The Lincoln’s driver was taken to Halifax Daytona Beach Hospital with serious injuries while his passenger, the 75-year-old, died at the crash site, FHP said. Both are from Illinois, the FHP said.

The Toyota driver and her passenger, a 29-year-old woman, remained at the scene without any injuries, according to FHP. Both are from Missouri.

The crash remains under investigation.
