Illinois meat company recalls various products possibly contaminated with listeria

Behrmann Meat and Processing Inc. is recalling approximately 87,382 pounds of various ready-to-eat meat products that may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced.

Listeria monocytogenes were identified in the processing environment and products through product and environmental testing conducted by FSIS and Behrmann, according to the FSIS.

The Albers, Illinois-based company delivers wholesale products to various stores and restaurants in a 175-200 mile radius. Springfield stores Humphrey's Market and Magro's Meat purchase products from Behrmann. A list of stores possibly affected can be found on the USDA website.

"We got rid of what we did have but we didn't have much," said Magro's meat manager Tracy Magro.

Most of the products Magro's received from Behrmann's weren't on the recall list, according to Magro.

Listeria can cause headaches, stiff neck, fever, achy muscles and diarrhea. The infection can be serious or even life-threatening for those who are immune-compromised such as pregnant women and their babies, seniors, and those with other health concerns. Listeria is triggered by bacteria that can live in soil, water, dust, animal feces and other substances and can grow in cold temperatures.

The FSIS is concerned that consumers have some contaminated products already in their home. Consumers are urged to not consume the products and throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. Currently, there have been no confirmed reports of illness due to the consumption of the products.

The possible contaminated products were produced from July 7 to Sept. 9, according to the FSIS. A list of the recalled items can be found on the USDA website.
