Illinois sees fourth lowest voter turnout for midterm elections in last 40 years

The 2022 midterm election results in Illinois have been certified by the Illinois State Board of Elections.

More than 4.1 million voters cast ballots for the Nov. 8 election for a statewide turnout of 51.06%, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

In total, 4,144,125 ballots were cast of 8,115,751 total registered voters in the state. It's the fourth lowest midterm turnout of the last 40 years. The only three years with a lower turnout in the past 40 years were 2006 (48.64%), 2010 (50.53%) and 2014 (49.18%).

Of the ballots cast for the 2022 midterm election, more than 39% of the ballots cast were cast before Election Day, with 18% cast by mail and 21% cast early in person.

There was a total of 741,572 ballots cast by mail for the midterm election this year.

Mail-in ballots changed the result of an election in Winnebago County.

Incumbent Winnebago County Treasurer Sue Goral, a Democrat, won re-election by defeating challenger Steve Schultz.

When Election Day was over, Schultz, a Republican, had a 2,277-vote lead, but the counting was not over as all mail-in ballots post marked by Nov. 8 and provisional ballots had yet to be counted.

When election officials finished tallying ballots, Goral had accumulated 50.11% of the vote to Schultz's 49.89% of the vote, a difference of 188 votes.
