Illinois state government has dozens of metro-east jobs open. One salary reaches $136K

Here’s an overview of five open state government positions in the metro-east area and what they pay.

Revenue audit supervisor

Agency: Department of Revenue

Wage: $7,413 to $11,380 per month

Location: Fairview Heights

The application for this revenue audit supervisor position closes Sept. 1.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree, including at least 12 credit hours in accounting, the listing says.

Other requirements include “four years of progressively responsible experience in the tax auditing of books, records and documents of corporations, partnerships and individuals,” as well as experience in income tax and lead auditor experience.

Job responsibilities include, according to the listing:

  • “Under general direction, plans, monitors and directs the activities of a staff of Auditors engaged in performing field audits of Illinois and/or out-of-state taxpayers subject to one or more taxes administered by the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR).

  • Interprets and explains the proper application of Income tax laws, rules, regulations and opinions.

  • Serves as working supervisor.

  • Performs pre-audit evaluations to establish suitability of cases to Auditor skill levels, scope and procedures to be employed.

  • Conducts post-audit conferences with taxpayers, or their representatives, to explain audit findings predicated on applicable tax laws rules, regulations, court decisions and precedents.

  • Confers by telephone or, as necessary, travels to taxpayer’s place of business to discuss and resolve technical or controversial tax issues with taxpayers and/or their representatives.

  • Confers with supervisor to provide information as to status of ongoing audits, or obtain guidance in resolving controversial or complex legal and/or technical tax problems.

  • Reviews and approves completed computerized audit reports.

  • Participates in providing classroom and on-the-job training of Trainees and Auditors.

  • Provides continuous communication and feedback to Region/District staff regarding performance, completing timely reviews and annual evaluations which clearly reflect the employee’s accomplishments and contributions, as well as short comings.”

Highway maintainer - snow removal operator - District 8

Agency: Department of Transportation

Wage: $20.55 per hour (temporary, on-call position)

Location: Metro-east counties of St. Clair, Madison, Monroe and more

There are 176 vacant positions for snow removal operators for operations yards across southwestern Illinois including in Belleville, East St. Louis, Carlyle, Columbia and more. This position is also referred to as an “hourly snowbird” in its listing.

Qualifications include “knowledge, skill and mental development” equivalent to a high school education and a Class A commercial driver’s license with endorsements including “X” or “N” with no airbrake restrictions, though a Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements may be acceptable for seasonal employees for up to two years.

This position also requires employees to have a driving record with no incidents that could result in license suspension or revocation for a year immediately preceding hiring.

The application for snow removal operator is due by Aug. 18.

Here are the position’s responsibilities, according to the listing:

  • Operate maintenance trucks, tractors, snowplows, salt spreaders, compressors and other highway equipment for the use of maintaining and snow plowing during the winter season.

  • Operate snowplows, spreads salt and sand.

  • Plow and remove snow.

  • Respond to emergency weather situations to inspect roadways and remove hazardous material/obstacles from roadways and drainage areas.

  • Assist in servicing, washing and making minor repairs of equipment such as trucks, tractors, snowplows, salt spreaders, compressors, graders and other light highway equipment.

  • Perform routine housekeeping duties and other tasks associated with the general care of the headquarters grounds.

Rehabilitation counselor trainee

Agency: Department of Human Services

Wage: $51,912 to $75,252 yearly

Location: East Alton

This position requires a master’s degree from a college or university accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education or a master’s degree from an accredited institution in rehabilitation counseling, rehabilitation administration, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, deaf education, special education or a related field, the listing says.

The application for rehabilitation counselor trainee is due Aug. 23.

Responsibilities for the job include the following, according to the listing:

  • “For a period not to exceed twelve months, receives formal and informal orientation in the principles, techniques, procedures, and policies related to rehabilitating persons with disabilities in a general vocational rehabilitation, transition, Secondary Transition Experience Program (STEP), or specialty caseload.

  • Studies and becomes proficient in utilizing the Division’s case management system.

  • Travels to attend and participate in staff meetings, conferences, workshops, and in-service training related to the discipline of rehabilitation counseling.”

Registered nurse I

Agency: Department of Human Services

Wage: $63,288 to $87,120 yearly

Location: Alton

This position requires “graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor’s degree in nursing,” as well as a registered nurse license in Illinois, the listing says.

Job responsibilities include, according to the listing:

  • “Utilizing the nursing process, provides professional nursing care to mentally ill patients on a living unit.

  • Provides guidance to lower-level staff for adherence to treatment plans and compliance with applicable operational policies and procedures, current professional standards of psychiatric mental health patient care.

  • Performs a variety of nursing care functions including preparing and administering medication, laboratory specimens, preparing patients for specialized diagnostic testing, providing Basic Life Support (BLS).

  • Consults with physicians and other professional staff regarding patient treatment and care.

  • Monitors the use of appropriate techniques to ensure a safe, secure therapeutic and sanitary environment of care and general performance of duties.

  • Completes mandatory nursing training requirements and continuing education workshops and seminars to maintain professional competency.”

Additional requirements, such as being able to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance, apply. This is a night shift position.

Conservation/historic preservation worker

Agency: Department of Natural Resources

Wage: $15 per hour (temporary, part-time position not to exceed six months)

Location: Grafton

Conditions of employment include, according to the listing:

  • “Ability to pass background check

  • Must be at least 17 years of age with a valid driver’s license

  • Elementary knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment essential to grounds and building maintenance

  • Ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and trucks

  • Must be able to carry up to 60 pounds and walk over rough, broken terrain.”
