Everyone loves a vanity plate that means something special, but sometimes that clever wit goes too far and is deemed offensive.

That's where the Illinois Secretary of State's office steps in.

Illinois received 54,236 requests for personalized vanity plates in 2022, according to a news release from the state office. Of those submissions, 383 were denied based on "their tawdry, lewd or offensive nature, or because they were difficult to read."

The office's Vehicle Services Department has a small panel review license plate requests to prevent offensive language from hitting the streets.

Some of the banned license plates for 2022 included:

  • PEEPEE

  • GOTPOOP

  • SUCKER

  • KISSASH

  • SUKIT

  • BITEU

  • DUCKYOU

  • COKAIN

  • HAIILNO

  • WHTHFUK

  • WMWWWMW

"We love the creativity and pride Illinoisans take in choosing their personalized license plates," said Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.

"Most plate requests are approved, but a small percentage fail to meet the standards of good taste and decency and are rejected because they violate the state's vehicle code."
