'I'm losing him.' Man shot in neck dies, Canton police dog nabs fleeing suspect

CANTON ‒ A woman frantically called 911 early Monday morning as she tried to calm her boyfriend who was struggling to breathe after being shot in the throat.

The woman tried her best to comfort the man and begged him to stay with her, according to a recording of the 911 call released by police. She begged the dispatcher to tell her what to do to help.

While applying pressure to the wound, the caller said she didn't see or hear anything. She didn't know who shot her boyfriend.

"He can't breathe. I'm losing him," she told the dispatcher.

When police arrived, they found 52-year-old Garry Marx near an entrance to the home with a gunshot wound to his neck. The Alliance area man was unresponsive and taken to Aultman Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

Police were called to the home in the 930 block of Dueber Avenue SW around 5 a.m.

After reviewing the evidence with the Canton Police Real Time Crime Center, detectives were able to identify a suspect, according to police news release.

A search warrant was obtained for Jamarri Harper, 22, of Cleveland, and an apartment in the 800 block of Deuber Avenue SW.

The Canton SWAT Team, along with detectives, were executing the search warrant when nearby officers spotted the suspect jumping from a second-floor window and over a fence, police said. He fled but was caught a few minutes later in a garage by police dog Scooby and his handler.

Harper remains in a local hospital for injuries sustained from the jump, according to police

He faces charges of murder, felonious assault, aggravated robbery, having weapons under disability and receiving stolen property.

Harper also is wanted in Cuyahoga County on unrelated active warrants for aggravated robbery, two counts of robbery, two counts of abduction, grand theft of a vehicle, aggravated theft and failure to comply with law enforcement, according to Canton police.
