Imagination Station helps inspire young building minds

CARLETON — Toledo's Imagination Station recently made its first visit to Airport Community Schools' Eyler Elementary.

The science center's activities focused on structures. Helping out were 34 parent volunteers.

"Imagination Station brought some hands-on STEM-related learning activities to the school, so the kids could learn about structures. All students, kindergarten through fourth grade, and the Local Based Classrooms spent time exploring, learning about and building structures. Amidst all the testing, this was a much-needed break for the students," said Carri Dyl from Eyler, who organized the event with the Math and Science Committees.

Twelve activity stations were offered: K'NEX Bridges, Building with Geometry, Paper Bridges, Wind Resistant Tower Building, Mystery Weight, Geodesic Domes, Roller Coaster Hill and Loop, Keystone Arches, Earthquake Challenge, Roman Arch, Blueprint Challenge and Film Canister Rockets.

Students also went home with a take-home activity.

"The students and families were provided real-world, inquiry-based experiences that supported and encouraged achievement in math and science," Dyl said. "Without the help of parent volunteers, these special learning activities would not be possible."
