Can You Imagine How Haw Par's (SGX:H02) Shareholders Feel About The 57% Share Price Increase?

In this article:

Generally speaking the aim of active stock picking is to find companies that provide returns that are superior to the market average. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. For example, the Haw Par Corporation Limited (SGX:H02) share price is up 57% in the last 5 years, clearly besting the market return of around -8.9% (ignoring dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 9.9% in the last year , including dividends .

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over half a decade, Haw Par managed to grow its earnings per share at 9.4% a year. That makes the EPS growth particularly close to the yearly share price growth of 9.4%. Therefore one could conclude that sentiment towards the shares hasn't morphed very much. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Haw Par the TSR over the last 5 years was 89%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Haw Par has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 9.9% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 14% a year, is even better. Before spending more time on Haw Par it might be wise to click here to see if insiders have been buying or selling shares.
