26-year-old man arrested in connection to killing of stepfather on northwest side Sunday

Indianapolis police arrested a 26-year-old man in connection to the killing of another man early Sunday on the northwest side of Indianapolis, according to police.

Officers responded to Stoughton Court, near the intersection of 46th Street and Dandy Trail, around 1 a.m. Sunday where they found 59-year-old Michael Langguth "unresponsive" inside a condo. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives responding to the scene arrested 26-year-old Peter Shales, according to police. A preliminary affidavit indicates Langguth was the husband of Shales' mother and that Shales suffered from mental health issues and would "go into fits of rage" directed at Langguth.

Witnesses told investigators that Shales had come to the condo the night of the killing "yelling and screaming," according to the affidavit. He reportedly punched Langguth and knocked him down before stomping on his head and face.

Detectives noted the condo was in "disarray" when they arrived.

"There were holes in the walls that appeared to be from someone one punching them, couches were turned over, there was a large TV on the floor broken and broken glass throughout the residence," investigators said in the affidavit.

Final charges will be made by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.
