Update: This article was updated Feb. 3, 2023 with information about the driver.

A driver fleeing officers on the northwest side of Indianapolis died after crashing into a utility pole early Tuesday, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

He was identified as Damion Collier, 15, according to the Marion County Coroner's Office.

An off-duty Indianapolis officer noticed the vehicle as he drove northbound on Interstate 465 at about 3:30 a.m. The vehicle was traveling with its lights off below the speed limit at about 45 mph and was straddling the shoulder of the interstate, said Lt. Shane Foley, a police department spokesperson.

The off-duty officer requested assistance from on-duty officers. After running the vehicle’s license plate, police learned it was reported stolen in Anderson on Monday, Foley said.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle at West 71st Street and Zionsville Road then the vehicle sped away. Police pursued the vehicle until it crashed into a utility pole at West 62nd Street and Zionsville Road.

The vehicle caught fire. Collier was the only person in the vehicle and no one else was injured in the crash.

Motorists were advised to avoid the intersection of West 62nd Street and Zionsville for several hours after the crash because traffic control signals were damaged.
