Impeachment Week 12: House Judiciary Committee to receive briefing on Ukraine

Intelligence and Judiciary Committee staffers will brief the Judiciary Committee, the panel now leading the inquiry, about the lengthy report released by Democratic lawmakers last week. The report, referencing President Donald Trump's involvement with Ukraine, determined the president solicited foreign interference in the 2020 election. After learning more about the Ukraine report and the legal basis for impeachment, Judiciary members must then decide whether to pursue other accusations. Rank-and-file lawmakers have said the committee could begin drafting articles as early as this week, in order to meet an informal deadline to have a House vote this month.

Justice watchdog set to release report on FBI surveillance of Trump campaign

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz on Monday is expected to release his long-awaited report into potential surveillance abuses by the FBI, focusing on the monitoring of Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page. The review centered on the FBI's surveillance of Page during the early stages of its investigation into Russian election interference and possible ties to the Trump campaign. Among the most politically charged areas of the review is whether the FBI abused its surveillance authority due to bias against the president. While the report is expected to be sharply critical of the bureau, The New York Times has reported that the inspector general is not expected to conclude that top FBI leaders acted out of bias.

Trump's profits from private businesses to get hard look from federal appeals courts

An obscure provision of the Constitution that Donald Trump ridiculed as "this phony Emoluments Clause" will be debated in two federal appeals courts this week, representing yet another legal threat to the embattled president. Courts in the District of Columbia and Richmond, Va., will hear arguments that the president routinely receives gifts from foreign and U.S. government officials. The question: Does that violate the Constitution? Democrats in Congress, the attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia, and some of Trump's competitors in New York City say the answer is yes. The Justice Department says the answer is no. On Monday, that debate will come before a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

And the 2020 Golden Globes nominees are ...

We'll find out Monday as the 77th Golden Globe Awards nominees are revealed. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which honors achievements in film and television, announced last month that Ricky Gervais will host the show for a fifth time. Among the favorites to grab film nominations include Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman," racing film "Ford v Ferrari" and Quentin Tarantino's 1960s fantasy "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." The three-hour award show is set to air live Jan. 5, 2020 on NBC.

Best Buy kicks off '12 Days of Deals'

If you didn't finish your holiday shopping on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, you're in luck: Best Buy is releasing more doorbusters. The electronics retailer is kicking off "12 Days of Deals" on Monday through Dec. 20. Each day it will reveal new deals at the season's guaranteed lowest prices on tech brands including Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, Google and more. The specific days are themed and Dec. 14 is expected to be one of the most anticipated with deals on select Apple products. Monday is described as "Gifts for families."
