Forty percent of the Transportation Security Administration's staff is unvaccinated as a deadline and holiday travel approach.

All civilian federal government workers must be vaccinated by Nov. 22 or risk losing their jobs. That means they must receive proper coronavirus vaccinations with the mandated waiting periods before that time.

"About 60% of our workforce has been vaccinated. That number needs to go quite a bit higher over the next few weeks," TSA Administrator David Pekoske said.

If an employee wants to make the vaccination deadline, he or she would need to have already received a first dose of the Moderna vaccine by this past Monday, receive the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine by Nov. 8, or the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine by Oct. 18, according to CNN.

"We are building contingency plans for if we do have some staffing shortages as a result of this, but I hope to avoid that," Pekoske told CNN on Wednesday.
