THIS is the hidden meaning behind Shailene Woodley's new fringe in Big Little Lies
If you're a Big Little Lies fan, you've probably already had a heated conversation about Shailene Woodley's new fringe. Whether you're sat firmly on the 'love it' side, or can't stand the thing - one thing's for sure, it has managed to send the internet into a collective meltdown.
So we were slightly surprised to learn that, the person behind the rather severe chop, was none other than Shailene herself - something she felt was necessary, following on from her character's traumatic experiences in season one. After debuting the fringe in season 2, multiple fans Tweeted about it, with some going as far as to say that the person behind her new hair style should 'be jailed.'
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Shailene spoke candidly about the importance of the fringe and all that it signifies. "I’ve been in this position in my life where, after a major breakup, triumph or celebration or after a big change, a lot of people alter the way they look. I felt that for Jane, she’s carried this weight of not feeling in her own body because of what happened to her for eight years. She felt disconnected from her own identity on not just an emotional and mental level, but on a physical level as well."
She went on to explain that the death of Jane's attacker Perry, at the end of season one, felt like an appropriate catalyst for the change. "I felt like maybe two or three weeks after that incident she would have woken up one morning, looked at herself in the mirror and thought, “This isn’t who I am anymore. This monster is gone and I’m not going to let him live in me or control me any longer.” In that moment, I feel like she took a pair of scissors and cut her bangs herself."
Despite the important meaning behind the fringe, people are still slamming the new 'do...

Some fans seemed set on getting people to look past the haircut, while others felt that it was an entirely believable response, after what happened to Jane.
"The most believable aspect of Big Little Lies season 2 is shailene woodley’s character getting bangs after experiencing a traumatic event."
"Stop talking about the bangs and start talking about how SHAILENE WOODLEY IS REALLY GIVING IT ALL IN #BLL2 . EMMYS HERE WE COME."
"'The most relatable part of Big Little Lies so far is that Shailene Woodley's character got bangs to help cope with everything that happened in season 1."
Personally, we think Shailene can pull it off, so can everyone please CHILL.
