'Important milestone.' SRHS breaks ground on $55M Union Medical Center replacement facility

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System administrators used shovels and a promise to provide quality care during the groundbreaking on a new $55 million Union Medical Center replacement facility on Tuesday, June 6.

Hospital officials said in a statement that the combined replacement hospital and medical office building creates a sustainable model for health care in Union County that centralizes physician practices, outpatient services and inpatient care.

"Union Medical Center is an integral part of the Spartanburg Regional family," Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Chief Operating Officer Mark Aycock said in a statement. "Breaking ground on this replacement hospital is an important milestone for our growing health system and for this community."

Located along U.S. Highway 176 across from Union Industrial Park and four miles from the current hospital, the 99,600-square-foot hospital will feature centralized physician practices, outpatient services and inpatient care, according to a hospital statement.

This new campus sits in the heart of Union County, central to the residential population and the business community.

Site preparation for the new facility began in spring 2023, with building completion expected in 2025.

The new campus will offer emergency care, imaging, Gibbs Cancer Center infusion services, inpatient care, a lab, Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health mammography services, outpatient services, a pharmacy and primary care.

The hospital's design will include large windows, open spaces and photos of iconic Union County scenes. A chapel will offer a space for prayer, and a healing garden at the hospital's entrance will welcome patients and guests.
