From Cosmopolitan

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are about to give birth to their first child any day now. YAY. Now, you might be wondering, "What are the odds that lil' nugget becomes King or Queen of England?" Well, good question. Here's the answer.

The first in line is, sadly, not Harry and Meg's child.

While I'm sure we would all love if a half-American baby became the reigning monarch of England, it's got a few people ahead of it.

First in line to the throne is currently Queen Elizabeth's son, Prince Charles. If the Queen abdicates, retires, or dies, she'll grant him the power to reign.

Okay, who's next?

Next in line after Prince Charles is his eldest son, Prince William. I fully support the movement to skip Charles and go straight to Will (bc King William just has such a nice ring to it) but sadly we'll have to wait awhile before that happens.

Once Prince William does take over as King, he'll have some pretty adorable successors. His children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, are all after him in line. George is third, Charlotte is fourth, and Louis is fifth.

But where is Harry (and bb Harry) in this lineup?

Prince Harry used to be third in line to the throne, but when Prince William and Kate Middleton had one, two, then three children, he got bumped down to sixth place. His children will fall right after him, so their little bb will be seventh in line.

Depending on how many children Harry and Meg have, Prince Andrew and anyone below him will get kicked further down the line. As a crazy hypothetical, let's say they have 10 kids, that would make Princess Andrew like... 18th in line for the throne, instead of 8th, where he'll be after Meghan and Harry give birth to their first.

And! Meghan and Harry's kids will fall in line in their birth order regardless of sex. So, if they have a girl first, she'll take the first spot under Harry, even though she's a girl. This is because of a law change. The Succession to the Crown Act of 2013 ensures that girls fall in line in the birth order, instead of after their brothers.

Princess Charlotte was the first to benefit from this. She's 4th in line even though her mom had another boy after her. Woo, gender equality!

So, here's the order of the first ten people in line, with Meghan and Harry's kids penciled in:

  1. Prince Charles

  2. Prince William

  3. Prince George

  4. Princess Charlotte

  5. Prince Louis

  6. Prince Harry

  7. Harry and Meghan's children

  8. Prince Andrew

  9. Princess Beatrice

  10. Princess Eugenie
