Recycling of customer's unused chili oil among Mesa restaurant's 5 health violations

Maricopa County health inspectors cited one Mesa restaurant — Golden Valley Chinese Restaurant — for five health violations during the week of July 28. Violations ranged from improper storage of food to inadequate chlorine sanitizer.

A priority violation is a major violation that directly contributes to an increased risk of foodborne illness or injury. If listed in the inspection reports, remedies implemented during the inspection are noted.

During the week of July 28, inspectors visited more than 1,100 restaurants as well as other food-serving facilities in hospitals, senior homes and schools. More than 200 restaurants were given an A rating. See a sampling of the many restaurants that inspectors graded A at the end of this article.

5 violations

Golden Valley Chinese Restaurant, 832 W. Baseline Road, Mesa

  • Tubs of raw chicken stored above peppers, broccoli, zucchini and ready-to-eat fried chicken in walk-in cooler. Manager moved raw items to the bottom shelves.

  • Dishes were washed, rinsed and sanitized in a solution containing less than 10 ppm chlorine sanitizer. Person in charge changed the supply bucket to a different brand, primed the machine, and remeasured the final rinse concentration at 50ppm chlorine.

  • A small dish of chili oil served to a customer but not used was emptied back into a large container of chili oil. Person in charge discarded the large container of chili oil containing the reserved portion at the time of inspection.

  • Chicken was improperly cooled. The manager voluntarily discarded the improperly cooled chicken at the time of inspection.

  • Cooked shrimp, BBQ pork, chicken, beef, and cut cabbage on time control were observed above proper temperature. The pork, shrimp and cabbage were voluntarily discarded. Other items were moved back to the walk-in cooler to rapidly cool.
