LAWRENCE — The inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer Rock Chalk Tipoff fundraiser will be held on Oct. 5 in Lawrence at Crown Automotive.

The event will be a continuation of the work between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Coaches vs. Cancer initiatives have raised more than $145 million for the American Cancer Society since 1993. The presenting sponsors are The University of Kansas Health System and The University of Kansas Cancer Center.

“The inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer Rock Chalk Tipoff will draw in prominent individuals and KU Fans from the regions business and philanthropic community and will feature live and silent auctions, honorary tributes, an extraordinary coaches panel and more,” the event’s game day information stated. “Money raised supports the Society’s mission to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer by directly helping people in our community, providing information and support, free lodging and transportation, and funding local research grants.”

Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self, who recently won his second NCAA Division I national championship leading the Jayhawks, will be one of the panel guests. So will several special guests who weren't yet named. More information on the timing of the event’s “game plan,” which includes a VIP reception ahead of the panel and live auction, and more can be found online at https://www.cvckcseasontipoff.org/.

That more includes how to purchase tickets. It includes how to donate. While the site is promoting this event, it makes clear that the efforts are about more than one night.
