Incarcerated man escapes from Yuma prison; law enforcement search underway

A prisoner was still unaccounted for Monday evening after the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry said he walked away from a work crew at 9:20 a.m. in San Luis.

The department identified the escaped prisoner as Jonathan Perryman, a minimum custody work crew member.

In a statement, the department said it had notified "all local law enforcement agencies as well as the U.S. Marshals Office, and U.S. Customs & Border Protection. ADCRR investigations and apprehension staff, including ASPC-Yuma staff, are actively searching for Perryman."

The San Luis Police Department posted on its Facebook page Monday morning that it was "on the lookout for an escaped prisoner from the Arizona Department of Corrections."

A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety said the agency put out an attempt to locate (ATL) on behalf of the Department of Corrections. An ATL is a standard broadcast to all highway patrol units in the area.

"Perryman was working at a recreation center in San Luis and was last seen walking into a restroom to wash paint off his hands by a work crew checker and a City of San Luis civilian supervisor," the Department said in a statement.

His last known location as of 3:40 p.m. was near the 400 block of West Cano Street, according to the Yuma Sheriff's Office Twitter. He was last seen wearing a gray hoodie and black pants.

People are advised to stay out of the area while officers continue their search.

Perryman was incarcerated in November of 2022 for charges related to misconduct involving weapons, according to the Department of Corrections. He was housed in the lowest custody level at the La Paz Unit at Yuma. Perryman's release date was set for June of 2026.

Perryman does not have any history of violence or prior violent convictions, according to the Department of Corrections.

Earlier in the day, the San Luis Police Department said it had contacted the Gadsden School District as well as the San Luis High School and the schools were placed on lockdown.
