Officials: Soldier shot, killed in Fort Stewart shooting

UPDATE 2:25 p.m.:

The victim in this morning's shooting on Fort Stewart has died, according to Fort Stewart officials. The soldier's identity will be released following the completion of the next-of-kin notification process.

The suspect in the shooting was apprehended by Fort Stewart law enforcement at the scene and transferred to U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division's custody. The investigation is ongoing, and there is no active threat to the community.

Winn Army Community Hospital will make Behavioral Health Counseling available in response to today’s incident. Appointment can be made through the Soldiers’ assigned unit or calling the main appointment line at 435-6633.

UPDATE 1:00 p.m.:

One victim is being treated by emergency personnel after a shooting incident at Fort Stewart this morning. The suspect is in custody and the victim's condition is not being released at the time, according to a Fort Stewart press release.

Law enforcement was dispatched to the Second Armored Brigade Combat Team complex at 9:57 a.m. and arrived on the scene at 10:04 a.m. The complex was briefly on lockdown at the time of the incident, said the release.

According to Fort Stewart officials, emergency services are responding to an incident "described as a shooting" at a building in the Second Armored Brigade Combat Team complex. Law enforcement has a suspect in custody. Additional details are unavailable and not being released at this time, read a press release sent out at 10:39 a.m.

"There is no active threat to the community," said Kevin Larson, chief public communications officer for Fort Stewart.

The Fort Stewart Army Base is located on General Stewart Way in Hinesville, Georgia, and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division.
