Incumbent Brodrick cruises in Watkinsville mayor race, but Oconee voters reject sales tax

Incumbent Brian Brodrick handily won the Watkinsville mayoral race in Tuesday's election, but voters rejected the special sales tax intended to improve traffic in Oconee County.

The SPLOST measure was voted down 1,712 to 1,534. The tax was expected to bring in about $56 million over a period of years

In the race for mayor, Brodrick received 433 votes to 163 for challenger Rebecca Billings, according to unofficial returns posted Tuesday night by the Oconee County Elections Office.

In the race for the Post 2 Watkinsville council seat, incumbent Connie L. Massey won by a margin of 438 to 138 over challenger Carolyn Maultsby.

In North High Shoals, Meagan Cundiff won easily over Jared Strickland in the race for the only contested council seat.
