India records record daily COVID-19 death toll
In India, hospitals are struggling to cope with the rise in COVID-19 infections - leaving people fighting for hospital beds, oxygen, and medicine.
In this hospital in New Delhi it’s two to a bed. The numbers of dead keep on rising with India reporting its highest daily toll with 1,761 deaths recorded overnight.
On Tuesday, the health ministry reported its sixth day straight of over 200,000 new infections – the world’s highest.
In the west of the country this mosque has been turned in to a coronavirus care center to meet demand.
Many unusual spaces are being converted to cope with the alarming rise in cases.
Britain, like many other countries, have detected cases of the Indian variant and banned all travel there on Monday.
India’s major cities were deserted on Tuesday as a six day long lockdown was put in to place.
The night before migrant workers packed bus stations saying they had no choice but to head home.
"Arvind Kejriwal (Delhi Chief Minister) said that nobody needs to leave Delhi. Ask him, where would daily wagers like us go? What will we do? They earn and eat the same day. If they don't earn in the day, they can't have a meal at night. Where will we go if not home?"
The world's second most populous country is grappling with its biggest public health emergency.
Health experts and officials say it was after the country lowered its guard.
