AKIKO FUJITA: In our world view, a coronavirus scare at the G7 gathering in London is forcing Indian officials to quarantine. Reuters reports two members of the delegation tested positive for COVID-19. That prompted the country's foreign minister to self-isolate, saying he was doing so out of an abundance of caution. The G7 is the first in-person diplomatic gathering since the pandemic began, but it comes as the virus continues to overwhelm India's hospitals. Daily infections rose by a record 382,000 Wednesday. The World Health Organization says India accounted for nearly half the COVID-19 cases globally in the last week.

Political gridlock continues in Israel after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to put together a new governing coalition by the Tuesday deadline. That threatens to push his Likud party into the opposition for the first time in 12 years. The political process now rests in the hands of President Reuven Rivlin, who's expected to give Netanyahu's opponents an opportunity to form an alternative coalition. He can also ask for parliament to select one of its members as the next leader. If that fails, the country would be forced into its fifth election in just two years this fall.

And the German government's unveiled ambitious plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions, calling for a 65% cut by the end of this decade. The announcement comes after the country's constitutional court ruled the government had failed to set out a plan for emissions cuts beyond 2030. The new targets call for an 80% reduction by 2040 and sets the country on a path to be net zero by 2045. That's five years earlier than the initial timeline. The cabinet will vote to formally approve the new proposal next week.
