Indian media outlet mistakenly says PM Lee will be replaced by Tharman

SINGAPORE — India Today, an Indian media outlet, has expressed 'regret' over an error in its coverage of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's arrival at the Group of 20 (G20) summit last Friday (8 Sept).
PM Lee arrived at the G20 Summit and was shown walking down a red carpet before engaging in a friendly exchange with India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
However, in its coverage, India Today introduced Lee as the "outgoing Prime Minister of Singapore" and said that former Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam — who was recently elected Singapore's next president — would become the country's new prime minister.
A video clip of the incident was shared to the Singapore subreddit r/Singapore by user tileblues over the weekend.
The publication later issued a clarification statement on Sunday (10 Sept), acknowledging their mistake.
In their statement, the outlet admitted their error, saying, "During the live commentary of the G20 Leaders Summit, it was inadvertently said on India Today that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is the 'outgoing Prime Minister' and will be 'replaced' by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Regretfully, both the above information are factually incorrect."
The outlet clarified that Lee is, in fact, the current Prime Minister of Singapore, and Tharman is the President-elect of Singapore.
"The error is regretted," the statement added.
The G20 summit is an international forum that brings together leaders from nineteen countries, representing some of the world's largest economies and the European Union (EU).
Its primary purpose is to address global economic issues, financial stability, and other critical challenges. This year's event took place in New Delhi from 9 September to 10 September.
Tharman recently secured victory in Singapore's ninth presidential election, receiving 70.40 per cent of the votes in the city-state's first contested presidential race in 12 years.
