A grenade exploded in an Indiana home on the 3400 block of West Lakeshore Drive Saturday at around 6:30 p.m., Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said. News Center 7 previously reported that the explosion killed a father and injured his two children.

The family was reportedly going through their grandfather’s belongings when they encountered a hand grenade.

Someone then pulled the pin and caused it to detonate.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the man responsive. But unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries before medical units could transport him to a hospital for life-saving care. He died at the scene.

Bryan Niedert, 47, was identified as the deceased father.

Niedert’s other children, a 14-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman, were taken to the hospital after both reported shrapnel-related injuries, Martinez informed.

The Porter County Bomb Squad responded to the scene to secure the area.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation into the incident.
