Indiana football's Curt Cignetti set to make $4.25M. Here's how that compares to other coaches

With Indiana University football heading into its first spring under new head coach Curt Cignetti, we turned to our salary database to see how his contract compares to other top public university earners in the state.

Not surprisingly, most of the highest-paid government employees are part of university sports programs that generate large amounts of revenue for the school.

Based on the most recently available data, Cignetti's salary is in line with other coaches around the state but it will take him a bit to catch up to the payout former IU football coach Tom Allen received.

Tom Allen buyout

Tom Allen topped the list with two $7.75 million installments as part of the financial settlement when IU fired him in November after seven years at the helm.

Mike Woodson salary

Indiana men's basketball head coach Mike Woodson received a $1 million raise in August 2023. He now earns $4.2 million annually.

Ryan Walters salary

Purdue football head coach Ryan Walters has a base salary of $4 million.

Matt Painter salary

Purdue men's basketball coach Matt Painter had a salary increase in 2022. For the 2023-24 season, Painter's salary is $3.67 million.

Curt Cignetti salary

New Indiana head football coach Curt Cignetti will make $4.25 million in the first year of his deal.

Teri Moren salary

Teri Moren signed a contract extension with IU in June 2023 which makes her one of the top-paid women's basketball coaches in the country. Moren now makes more than $1.3 million a year.

Bryant Haines salary

Bryant Haines will make $1.025M in guaranteed annual compensation as the IU defensive coordinator.

Mike Bobinski salary

The first non-coach to make the list, Purdue University Director of Athletics Mike Bobinski had his contract extended in October 2023. He makes a base salary of $975,000.

Graham Harrell salary

Purdue offensive coordinator Graham Harrell is the highest-paid Boilermaker assistant at $900,000 a year.

Kevin Kane salary

Purdue defensive coordinator Kevin Kane has a base pay of $850,000.
