CLASS 6A: Westfield 24, Hamilton SE 22
Hamilton Southeastern came within 30 seconds of stunning defending champion Westfield in the sectional championship game Friday night, but the Shamrocks survived with kicker Caleb King delivering the game-winning field goal with 3.7 seconds remaining.
Here's what you need to know from Friday's thriller.
Turning point
Hamilton Southeastern capped a nearly seven-minute drive with a short run, then completed the 2-point conversion to grab a 22-21 lead with 35.9 seconds remaining.
Undaunted, quarterback Maximus Webster went to work, stringing together a series of completions to quickly move his team into enemy territory with 17 seconds remaining.
Webster, who ran in for a touchdown himself earlier in the game, hit Micah Hauser on a quick pass along the Westfield sideline to reach the 15, then registered another completion to get to the 8-yard line. That set the stage for kicker Caleb King, who split the uprights from about 18 yards out to give Westfield a 24-22 lead with 3.7 seconds remaining.
Play of the game
A fourth-down stop by the Westfield defense gave way to one of the offense's most explosive plays of the night midway through the fourth quarter.
After moving the ball largely with short passes and running plays, the Shamrocks finally took their shot downfield with Webster airing out a 43-yard pass into double coverage to wideout Jackson Wasserstrom, who turned around to catch the ball as he fell into the end zone.
That gave Westfield a 21-4 lead with 7:57 remaining and set that wild finish into motion.
Players of the game
Maximus Webster, Westfield --- Webster was expectedly dependable throughout the game, but he was particularly was brilliant on that final drive, calmly leading the Shamrocks down the field to set up the game-winning field goal.
Blaine Wertz, HSE --- The senior tailback earned his lunch money Friday night, pounding away at the vaunted Westfield defense on the ground. He exited the game on a couple occasions with cramping issues (including on that go-ahead drive late in the fourth quarter), but returned before long and went back to work on the ground. -- Brian Haenchen

CLASS 6A: Brownsburg 31, Carmel 7
Play of the Game
They say the low man wins in football, and Brownsburg running back Garrett Sherrell showed that at 5-7, 180 pounds, he's much harder to tackle than his frame would project. On third-and-11 from the Carmel 11-yard line, Sherrell burst through a hole and met hard-hitting Carmel safety Solomon Williams head on. Sherrell absored the blow, kept his feet and rumbled into the end zone for the score.
Turning Point
Turnovers plagued Brownsburg during its last meeting with Carmel, but this time it was the Greyhounds that continually coughed up the ball. After fumbling away their first kickoff return of the game, the Greyhounds' second possession ended with a Zach Osborne lost fumble. The Bulldogs made the visitors pay for their mistake, marching down the field on a 16-play drive, capped by Sherrell's tough touchdown run. The score put Brownsburg up 21-0, putting them in complete control early in the second quarter.
Player of the Game
Garrett Sherrell. The Brownsburg secondary led by safety R.J. Myles deserves recognition for the work they did in containing Carmel's passing attack. With a three-score lead, Isaiah Street, Leighton Jones and the Brownsburg front seven consistently supplied pressure as Carmel looked to mount a comeback going almost exclusively through the air. But ultimately, Sherrell's performance was dominant enough to earn the player of the game nod. The sophomore rushed for over 100 yards and he added a 7-yard touchdown catch to seal the win. -- Akeem Glaspie

CLASS 6A: Lawrence North 28, Lawrence Central 20
Three takeaways from Lawrence North’s 28-20 Class 6A Sectional 7 championship win over Lawrence Central on Friday night.
Play of the game
There are a couple of choices here, but I’m going with Omar Cooper’s 49-yard touchdown catch at the end of the first half for Lawrence North. Credit quarterback Montez Jones for escaping the rush, buying time, and then launching the ball downfield to the Indiana recruit, who went up and caught the ball over two defenders at the Lawrence Central 7-yard-line, then turned and dove into the end zone with 11.5 seconds remaining in the half. It was a huge play to put Lawrence North up 20-7 going into halftime. “He’s a great player,” Lawrence Central coach Will Patterson said of Cooper.
Omar Cooper ... that's not fair. pic.twitter.com/xgOAmiEUKx
— Kyle Neddenriep (@KyleNeddenriep) November 6, 2021
Turning point
Lawrence Central, which improved dramatically from last year’s 0-10 season to finish 4-7, will find quite a few potential turning point plays in this game, including two possessions in the first quarter inside the Lawrence North 10 that yielded zero points. But I thought the first possession of the second half set the tone for the remainder of the game. After Cooper’s touchdown to end the half, Lawrence North got the ball coming out of halftime and drive 65 yards in 10 plays, capped with Ali Richardson’s 1-yard touchdown run. That gave Lawrence North (7-3) a 28-7 lead midway through the third quarter and forced the Bears to play catch up the rest of the game.
Standout performer
Can you give it to the entire Lawrence North program? Athletic director Mike Penrose was nearly in tears after the game, talking about the dedication coach Pat Mallory has shown in building the program since he took over nine years ago. Progress was slow at times, but the Wildcats finally turned the corner with a winning record last year for the first time in 15 years and hoisted the sectional championship trophy on Friday night for the first time since 1990. I thought Mallory might stand with his team all night taking pictures. It was a cool moment for a program that has been through some tough years.-- Kyle Neddenriep

CLASS 5A: New Palestine 20, Whiteland 17
Dragons quarterback Damon Hockett scored on an 8-yard run late in the third quarter and New Palestine survived a late field goal miss by the Warriors to hold on for the Class 5-A, sectional 14 championship.
Turning point
The New Palestine defense allowed two long touchdown runs in the opening quarter as Whiteland quarterback Kevin Denham popped out of a scrum trying to convert a fourth-and-one and 45 yards later the Warriors had a 7-0 lead.
On its next drive -- if you can call a one-play possession a “drive” – slot back Quinn Warweg took off around left end on a jet sweep and scored from 81 yards out.
From that point on, the Warriors barely managed more than the 126 yards gained on those two plays. Of the other 132 yards Whiteland gained rushing the ball, 54 came on the final drive. The defensive effort allowed the NP offense, led by Hockett and sophomore tailback Grayson Thomas to get their team back in the game.

Play of the game
The New Pal defense saw Whiteland drive from its 26 down inside the 15 with just over a minute to go. With a first down at the NP 13, senior defensive back Gus Walling recorded a sack of Denham and, two plays later, the secondary’s coverage came up with an incompletion from Denham to Warweg in the end zone. Whiteland kicker David Mathis then missed a 30-yard field goal with :24 left.

CLASS 4A: Roncalli 35, Bishop Chatard 21
Play of the Game
Roncalli quarterback Aidan Leffler made a lot of big throws in this sectional final, but he made his best play with his legs. With just over 10 minutes left in the game and the Royals leading by only 8, Leffler rolled out to his left and cut up field, dodging defenders on his way to the end zone for a 17-yard rushing TD. The scramble gave Roncalli a 15-point advantage at a critical point in the contest.

Turning point
After Leffler pushed the Roncalli lead out to 15 in the fourth quarter with his rushing score, Chatard embarked on a drive that could have made things interesting. The Trojans got to the Royal 32-yard line before Chatard quarterback Carter St. John was intercepted by Roncalli defensive back Joey Milto in the end zone. The pick by the senior put a stop to Chatard’s comeback bid. Royal running back Luke Hansen scored on a 41-yard run on the team’s next possession to put things out of reach.
Players of the game
Leffler and Hansen were both outstanding for the Royals. Leffler finished 10-of-16 through the air for 205 yards and three TDs. He also rushed for 37 yards and a score. Hansen totaled 177 yards on the ground and 64 yards receiving. — Jack Carney

CLASS 3A: Tri-West 18, Danville 13
Striking First
A short 13-yard touchdown pass brought the capacity crowd to their collective feet as Tyler Dustin hauled in a Kale Payne pass on the left side to put Danville ahead 7-0 with a successful PAT with 5:31 left in the first quarter.
The reception capped off a 58-yard drive that included a 15-yard run on a second and 16 and a successful third down conversion to put the ball at the 13 yard line ahead of the game’s first touchdown.
Coming Close
After a three and out on their first drive of the game, Tri-West drove down the field on their next two drives. The Bruins could not get the ball across the goal line each time, having to instead rely on Cortland Williams’s leg to put points on the board.
Williams succeeded with a short field goal on Tri-West’s second drive of the game to make the score 7-3. After Jacen Mohr caught a 54-yard pass from Ty Owens that put Tri-West on the 1 yard line, Danville’s defense held the Bruins to a field goal attempt that was no good after Trey Morrell got a hand on the ball to block the attempt.
Capitalizing
After recovering a Danville fumble early in the third quarter, Tri-West capitalized with a fast drive that featured a 28-yard run by Davon Brown to put the Bruins on the seven yard line. Alex Covey then caught the go-ahead touchdown pass from Owens to put the Bruins up 10-7 after a successful extra point attempt.
After Danville failed to convert on fourth down, Tri-West took matters into their own hands again as Owens threw another long ball to Mohr for a touchdown from 32 yards away from the end zone. A botched extra point attempt turned into a successful two-point conversion as Cameron VanDerGoore ran the ball in to make the score 18-7 as the third quarter came to a close shortly thereafter.
The Attempted Comeback
After Brian Wuest caught a 65 yard touchdown pass from Payne, a failed two point conversion brought the score to 18-13 with 5:59 to go in the game.
However, a Payne interception sealed Danville’s fate as Tri-West won 18-13. -- Chris DeHarde

The visiting Crusaders (9-3) relied on their usual script -- defensive dominance and a steady attack -- to author their 12th sectional championship in knocking off the previously unbeaten Bulldogs (10-1). Scecina’s defense couldn’t produce another shutout, but picked off four passes from the high-powered Centerville offense and held it to just 150 total yards. Aidan Ray tossed two touchdown passes and Dequan Stennis had one TD, ran for a game-high 80 yards and grabbed one of the four picks for the victors.

CLASS A: Lutheran 34, Covenant Christian 27
Tony Flatt threw four touchdown passes in the first three quarters to lift the defending state Class A champion Warriors (7-5) to a 27-13 lead, only to see the No. 1 Saints (12-0) ride the high-powered contributions of quarterback Montasi Clay to a dazzling second-half comeback. Clay ran for two TDs and passed for two more, sparking the rally that gave Lutheran its eighth sectional championship and vengeance for last year’s painful 46-38 loss to Covenant Christian in sectional play. Flatt passed for 310 yards and ran for 83 more, but couldn’t get the Warriors over the last hurdle.
