Indiana High School Sports Awards honored state's best of the best. See who won.

IndyStar honored more than 300 student-athletes at the 2023 Indiana High School Sports Awards show, presented by the Indiana Pacers, on Wednesday at Clowes Memorial Hall.

The show celebrates athletes from the entire state. Nineteen athletes were honored as state-wide players of the year in their respective sports, spring watch list athletes were honored, and eight premier awards were handed out. Spring sports winners will be announced this summer after all spring sports have finished.

The 6-1 Notre Dame recruit put together a special senior season as he averaged 30.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 3.3 steals per game to lead Penn to a 28-2 record and within one point of a Class 4A state finals appearance. Burton scored 2,273 career points to rank No. 20 on the state’s all-time scoring list.

The North Carolina commit is Zionsville's all-time leading scorer with 1,668 points and ranks second in career rebounds and third in career steals. She led the Eagles to 57 wins over her four seasons. As a senior, she averaged 22.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, while committing a career-low 54 turnovers.

Boys Team of the Year: Ben Davis basketball

Ben Davis became the 14th team in the state’s high school boys basketball history to finish undefeated and the first to go 33-0. The top-ranked Giants, led by Indiana All-Stars Sheridan Sharp and Zane Doughty won the Marion County title, Hall of Fame Classic and Class 4A state title.

The Millers beat Carmel 1-0 in the Class 3A state championship game as Mike Brady’s team won its third state title in four years. Over the past four seasons, Noblesville has a record of 70-2-5 and has completely dominated the Indiana girls soccer scene.

Coach of the Year: Don Carlisle, Ben Davis boys basketball

In his fifth season as Ben Davis coach, Carlisle led the Giants to a Class 4A boys basketball state title and undefeated 33-0 record. He was also chosen to coach this year’s Indiana All-Stars.

Courage Award: Da'John Craig, Lawrence Central boys basketball

In the early morning hours June 9, 2022, Craig heard his mother yelling. He jumped to his feet and opened his bedroom door to see his mother and sister, both panicking as his father, Damon Craig, was face-up on the floor. Da’John attempted CPR on his father for several minutes before his dad was rushed via ambulance to a hospital. Damon Craig died from a heart attack at 46. Basketball helped keep his dad’s memory close and Da’John led Lawrence Central in scoring this season and earned all-state honorable mention as a junior, carrying the lessons his dad had taught him.

Marion County Girls Athlete of the Year, presented by Kiwanis Club: Autumn Rucker, Pike

This award is given to an Indianapolis-area female athlete who displays leadership, discipline and caring for others in her school, team and community.

Rucker is a three-sport athlete in cross-country, basketball and track, Rucker also carries a 3.6 grade point average and is active with extracurricular activities and in her community. According to her basketball coach, Keith Hollins, Rucker "has been brought up in a family that teaches love, forgiveness, and moral responsibility. As a high school student, Autumn is faced with difficult decisions every single day. She always makes the right choice. She holds firmly to her beliefs yet she is accepting of everyone who crosses her path."

IndyStar Mr. Football, presented by Indianapolis Colts: Drayk Bowen, Andrean

There are not many boxes Bowen did not check. As a junior, he led Andrean to a Class 2A state championship and was named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year. As a senior, he led Andrean back to the finals before coming up short against Evansville Mater Dei in the championship game. A two-way star for Andrean, the Notre Dame bound recruit produced 370 tackles and ran for nearly 3,000 yards with 49 TDs in his career.

Boys Athlete of the Year: Max Clark, Franklin

Clark is rated the No. 1 high school prospect by MLB.com and Baseball America. The sweet-swinging lefty is in line to be among the first picks in this year’s MLB draft. Clark also was a key piece as a receiver for Franklin’s football team.

Girls Athlete of the Year: Keagan Rothrock, Roncalli

The nation’s top high school softball player, Rothrock had a sterling junior season, going 28-0, with 382 strikeouts and eight no-hitters in leading the Royals to back-to-back state titles. She’ll look to cap her senior year with another title and a place in the state’s record books.

Girls Cross-Country Runner of the Year: Lily Cridge, Bishop Chatard

The Bishop Chatard senior repeated as the Indiana individual girls cross-country state champion. She opened the postseason with arguably the fastest 5,000 meters ever run in Indiana high school history, winning the Brebeuf Sectional in 16:46.3, or 39 seconds faster than the girls course record she set last year. She is committed to run for powerhouse Oregon.

Boys Cross-Country Runner of the Year: Kole Mathison, Carmel

Mathison, the Indiana state champion, won a national championship in December in San Diego, pacing the elite field of prep runners by 11 seconds. At the state meet, his 1-2 finish with Carmel teammate Tony Provenzano helped the Greyhounds win the IHSAA team state title. Last spring in track, the University of Colorado commit became the first junior to win a 1,600 and 3,200 meter double at the state meet since 2003.

Girls Soccer Player of the Year: Ava Bramblett, Noblesville

Bramblett, an Ohio State recruit, matched her career-high with 17 goals — including the game-winner in the state final. "Superstars win games, and she got the goal when they needed it," Carmel coach Frank Dixon said. The three-time state champion graduates with 49 goals and 23 assists and only two losses in four seasons.

Boys Soccer Player of the Year: Saed Anabtawi, FW Canterbury

A two-time United Soccer Coaches All-American and three-time Indiana Soccer Coaches Association All-State selection, Anabtawi led Fort Wayne Canterbury to three sectional titles and two regional titles. An Indiana University recruit, he totaled 27 shutouts and 294 saves in his prep career.

Girls Swimmer of the Year: Alex Shackell, Carmel

Shackell was a part of four record-setting wins at the state finals. She broke her own state record in the 50 free with the fourth-fastest time in the nation. She then broke her own state record in the 100 butterfly. Shackell, who anchored the Greyhounds’ 200 freestyle relay that established a new state mark, was also part of a national-record setting 200 medley relay.

Boys Swimmer of the Year: Will Modglin, Zionsville

The Texas recruit set a national record in the 100 backstroke prelims at state, breaking the 12-year-old mark of four-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Murphy. Modglin won his third consecutive state title in the event, and also three-peated and broke his own state record in the 200 individual medley. He then led off for Zionsville’s 200 free relay team, which also set a new state record.

Gymnast of the Year: Gabi Grisafi, Valparaiso

The senior won the all-around title at the state meet, leading the Vikings to a state-record 14th team championship. A ‘perfectionist,’ the University of Kentucky-bound Grisafi won the balance beam, finished second on the vault and was third on the uneven bars at the state finals. She won regional titles on floor, vault and uneven bars on her way to another all-around title.

Girls Golfer of the Year: Ava Bunker, Columbus North

Bunker won the IHSAA individual state title by nine strokes, finishing the finals 2-under-par. She became just the second freshman to win the individual state title, and the first in nearly 20 years. In her first varsity season, Bunker became the first in school history to finish a season with an under-par average.

Boys Tennis Player of the Year: Aaron Gu, Harrison (W.L.)

The four-year No. 1 singles player for the Raiders, Gu completed a perfect 30-0 season with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Bloomington North's Nicholas Shirley in the boys tennis singles state championship match. Gu finished his senior year losing just one set all season. He will play collegiately at the Naval Academy.

Volleyball Player of the Year: Chloe Chicoine, McCutcheon

Chicoine's trophy room already is littered with awards, most notably Gatorade Player of the Year, Class 4A state champion, Best Spiker at the Pan Am Cup, where she led USA's U21 team to a gold medal, and the newly created Indiana Miss Volleyball award, of which she is the first winner. A Purdue recruit, she recorded more than 2,000 kills in her career for McCutcheon.

Wrestler of the Year: Bryce Lowery, Roncalli

Ranked No. 1 at 152 pounds, Lowery entered the state finals with a perfect 43-0 record and left with his first state title. The IU recruit’s career mirrors that of his older brother, Brayden, who placed in the state finals three times before breaking through as a senior with a state title.

School Spirit Award: North Central High School

The award was determined by a state-wide online vote. North Central wins $1,000 for its school’s athletic department.
