‘Indiana Jones 5’ Is Definitely Happening Without Spielberg
It's official: Harrison Ford will be returning to crack his famous whip once more as archaeologist-turned-adventurer Indiana Jones in a long-delayed fifth installment of the beloved movie franchise. Ford confirmed recently that shooting is expected to begin in the next couple of months.
However, Ford's longtime creative collaborator on the series, Steven Spielberg, will not be directing. Variety reports that Spielberg has voluntarily stepped away from the project in order to allow a "new generation" of storytelling talent to take Indy in a different direction.
Who is directing?
According to rumors, James Mangold is being courted to take over; he is best known for directing the critically acclaimed X-Men spinoff Logan and last year's Ford v Ferrari. His other credits as director include previous Hugh Jackman vehicle The Wolverine, musical biopic Walk the Line, and the thriller Identity.
What is the plot?
Not much is known about the upcoming movie, other than it is most definitely not a reboot or prequel. Ford made as much clear in May 2019, when he told The Today Show, that none of the famous Chrises would be donning his iconic hat any time soon.
Unlike the standalone Star Wars movie which starred Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Ford is adamant that nobody other than him will ever play his most iconic character. "Nobody is going to be Indiana Jones, don't you get it?" He said. "I'm Indiana Jones. When I'm gone, he's gone. It's easy."
When is the release date?
While production on the as-yet-untitled fifth movie has been pushed back multiple times, it is still currently scheduled for a release of July 9, 2021.
