10-Year-Old Indiana Girl Saves Family From Second-Story Apartment Fire

Six family members in Madison, Indiana, were rescued from a second-floor apartment fire, falling into the arms of police officers below after their home caught fire early on Sunday, July 3.

Five children, ranging in age from 3 to 13, and their grandmother were trapped in their second-story apartment after the fire broke out.

According to a local news report, a 10-year-old girl saved the family by punching through a window after wrapping her hands with T-shirts. "Then she just started pulling the babies out, and all the children jumped out,” Patrolman Nichole Midgett said, according to TV station WAVE.

Police reported hearing glass break upon their arrival and seeing “heavy fire” blocking the front door and the top of the staircase, according to WAVE.

Officers with the Madison Police Department huddled under the window and safely caught the children and their grandmother one by one, as seen in the footage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to officials. Credit: Madison Police Department via Storyful
