Indiana Senate candidates will debate Sunday. Here's how to watch.

The three Indiana candidates for U.S. Senate will participate in their only debate this Sunday night, as Republican Sen. Todd Young attempts to defend his seat and his record.

Young faces Democrat Thomas McDermott, Jr. and Libertarian James Sceniak on the ballot. The hour-long debate, hosted by the Indiana Debate Commission, will be aired starting at 7 p.m. on IndyStar.com, on IndyStar's Facebook account and on IndyStar's Youtube channel. It will be moderated by Laura Merrifield Wilson, a University of Indianapolis political science professor.

Young is the frontrunner, having dominated in fundraising in the early part of the campaign after both he and McDermott bypassed any primary opponents in May. Campaign finance reports for the third quarter are due Saturday.

Recent polling, however, shared with IndyStar showed McDermott trailing not far behind Young. An Aug. 20-24 poll conducted on behalf of Democrat Thomas McDermott Jr.'s campaign showed that 45% of the 2,111 likely voters surveyed said they would vote for Young in November, while 42% said they would vote for McDermott in November. The remaining 13% surveyed said they either were unsure or wouldn't vote.

The poll, conducted by California-based Change Research showed there was a margin of error of about 2.62 percentage points.

Likewise, a poll conducted by Indy Politics and Illinois-based ARW Strategies with a margin of error of 4 percentage points, showed McDermott down by just 2 percentage points. But, nationally political ratings groups still consider the seat safely Republican, and have not labeled it competitive.
