Indiana State Fair closed due to weather, but reopens after storm

A thunderstorm temporarily halted opening day of the Indiana State Fair.

At 11 a.m. the fair announced gates were reopening.

The gates were closed as a thunderstorm darkened the skies over Indianapolis early Friday morning.

"Severe weather is an immediate threat to the Fairgrounds. Seek shelter in the nearest building," the fair tweeted.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement minutes before 9 a.m. noting that Indianapolis, Lawrence and Plainfield were under threat of storms that could produce hail and 50 mph wind gusts.
