Indiana State Police arrest Colorado murder suspect in Posey County

EVANSVILLE — An attempted traffic stop in Posey County led Indiana State Police troopers to arrest a man Friday suspected of killing a gas station clerk in Colorado earlier in the week, the agency said.

In a news release, Indiana State Police Sgt. Todd Ringle identified the man as 26-year-old Shawnathan Deangelo Chance, who was arrested and preliminarily charged with murder, resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony, possession of a stolen vehicle, a Level 6 felony, and reckless driving, a Class B misdemeanor.

Chance is currently being held at the Posey County jail without bond until he can be transferred to Colorado to face the murder charge, Ringle said.

The ISP did not release details about the homicide, but said it is being investigated by the Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Police Department. Wheat Ridge is located west of Denver, Colorado, and is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area.

In a news release, the Wheat Ridge Police Department confirmed the Indiana State Police had arrested Chance after the department issued a nationwide "be on the lookout," or BOLO, notification.

"The Indiana State Police were able to recognize the vehicle as wanted out of Wheat Ridge in connection to this awful incident," the news release states.

The incident, as described by Wheat Ridge police, occurred around 8 p.m. Thursday night, when officers called to investigate suspicious activity at a gas station found the store's clerk deceased.

"Through video surveillance, it was determined that a suspect attacked the clerk, ultimately shooting and killing him," the Wheat Ridge Police Department wrote in a separate news release. "That suspect then fled in the victim's vehicle."

On Friday, Chance allegedly sped away from ISP troopers attempting a traffic stop. According to Ringle, a trooper patrolling Interstate 64 in Posey County near Mile Marker 7 observed Chance driving a Nissan Pathfinder SUV east at 86 mph.

The trooper tried to stop the Nissan for a speeding infraction, but Chance allegedly continued to travel east "at a high rate of speed" before fleeing north and then west on County Road 1000 South.

Ringle said Chance eventually lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll several times before coming to a rest in an open field, where Chance was found uninjured. He was arrested.

"A vehicle registration inquiry on the Nissan revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen from Wheat Ridge, Colorado, and may have been involved in a homicide on Thursday," Ringle wrote in the news release.

Anyone with information pertaining to the homicide investigation is asked to call the Wheat Ridge Police Department at 303-237-2220.

"This is a terrible tragedy," the department said in a Facebook post. "Please keep the family and friends of the victim close to your hearts. This type of crime is extremely rare in Wheat Ridge, and we know this is shocking news for our tight-knit community."
