State Police: Beech Grove officer fires shot after vehicle pursuit, 1 person injured

One man was injured after an officer fired their weapon following a vehicle pursuit just north of Beech Grove Friday afternoon.

The pursuit began when Beech Grove Police Department officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle around 12:20 p.m., Indiana State Police public information Sgt. John Perrine said.

The officers tried using an intervention maneuver with their squad cars multiple times to stop the vehicle, Perrine said. It was unclear where the pursuit began, but it ended along Emerson Avenue, just south of Raymond Street. The suspect began ramming his vehicle into the officers’ vehicles, Perrine said, and that was when an officer fired their weapon.

"At least one shot was fired by an officer, who was involved, and the suspect has an injury consistent with a gunshot wound,” Perrine said.

The suspect was in stable condition and no officers were injured. State Police will be investigating the shooting. The officers involved were wearing body cameras.

As of publication, Perrine could not yet confirm who had shot the suspect or if he displayed any weapons before the officer fired theirs.

“It's early in our investigation to know,” Perrine said. “We've got a lot of work to do still here at the scene and our crime scene investigators aren't here to start looking at the evidence yet.”
