Indiana Statehouse: State Sen. Jack Sandlin remembered as law enforcement and social conservative champion

The last public official to be honored by lying in state was the longtime Indianapolis mayor and U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar in 2019, according to the governor's office. It's a rare honor that has been bestowed upon public servants such state Rep. Bill Crawford in 2015, former Democratic U.S. Rep. Julia Carson in 2007 and former Republican Gov. Robert Orr in 2004.

There also is a public memorial service being held 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at G.H. Herrmann Funeral Homes in Indianapolis. Sandlin will be buried at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana, on Saturday, with a graveside service at 10 a.m.

Sandlin died Sept. 20 after a long career in public service that included the state senate, Indianapolis City-County Council, and police departments in Indianapolis and Southport. He was a veteran, staunch conservative, advocate for law enforcement and a grandfather. He was 72.
